Breast Augmentation vs Breast Lift: What’s the Difference?

If you're considering breast surgery after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss, you might be dealing with two common issues: an overall loss of volume or sagging breasts. While these concerns often go hand in hand, they're actually separate problems with different solutions.

Breast augmentation uses implants to restore fullness, while a breast lift corrects sagging by reshaping and repositioning the existing tissue, without changing the size. Some patients need one, some need the other, and many get the best results by combining both.

If you're trying to navigate this decision in Orange County, CA, Dr. Saba Motakef, a board-certified plastic surgeon at Motakef Plastic Surgery + Med Spa, can offer personalized guidance to help you find the right path forward. Call now to meet with our Anaheim Hills plastic surgeon.

Changes to the breasts after pregnancy and aging

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, hormonal changes, and natural aging can all affect the look and feel of your breasts. Many women notice a loss of volume that can leave their chest looking "deflated" or flat. At the same time, stretched skin and weakened ligaments can cause the breasts to lose their youthful shape.

Sometimes, only one of these changes is noticeable. Other times, both happen at once. If you feel self-conscious about your breasts, breast augmentation or a breast lift can help.

What is breast augmentation?

First, what is breast augmentation? The surgery involves our Anaheim Hills plastic surgeon making a small incision, typically in the crease under the breast, around the areola, or in the armpit. Through this incision, a pocket is created either above or below the chest muscle. A medical-grade implant, chosen for its specific shape, size, and material (silicone or saline), is then inserted into this pocket. Once the implant is positioned to achieve the desired look and symmetry, the incision is closed with sutures.

How does a breast lift work?

Now, how does a breast lift work? During this procedure, Dr. Motakef makes incisions to remove extra skin and tighten the surrounding tissue. The nipple and areola are then repositioned to a higher, more youthful position on the breast mound. In some cases, the areola may be reduced to better match the new breast contour. The remaining skin is brought together and closed, creating a firmer, lifted shape. The result should address issues like sagging breasts and provide a perkier appearance.

When both procedures make sense

So, how do you know which breast procedure is right for you? It all comes down to your primary concerns and aesthetic goals. Here's a simple breakdown of when each approach might be the best fit:

  • Breast augmentation alone: Loss of volume is the primary concern, breast position is good, and the nipples point forward rather than downward.
  • Breast lift alone: Shape and position are the main concerns, volume is adequate, and the nipples sit at or below the breast crease.
  • Combination procedure: Sagging breasts have also lost fullness, and the patient wants to address position, shape, and size in a single procedure with one recovery period.
