There are fewer cosmetic procedures that can make as big of a difference in a woman’s life than breast surgery. From restoring a woman’s pre-baby body to reversing the effects of gravity and aging, the potential benefits of cosmetic breast surgery are virtually endless. However, with a number of different procedures and approaches available, many women are unsure about which type of breast surgery they actually need. Award-winning plastic surgeon Dr. Saba Motakef and the expert team at Motakef Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery are proud to help women achieve or restore a body they can feel confident and feminine in with the most advanced breast surgeries available in Orange County, CA. Learn more about the differences between two of the most popular procedures – breast augmentation and breast lift – and find out whether you may need one, the other, or both!

Do I need a breast lift with my breast implants?

Without a doubt, one of the most common questions asked by women considering breast implants is whether or not they also need a breast lift. To answer this question, it is important to first understand what each procedure is, what it does, and how it works:

  • Breast augmentation: Designed to increase the size, shape, and overall appearance of the breast through the use of artificial implants (silicone gel or saline), fat transfer to the breast, or a combination of both

  • Breast lift: A body contouring procedure that aims to reshape and raise the breasts to a more youthful, attractive, natural-looking position through skin removal and tightening

For women who are happy with their breast volume but are simply looking to make their droopy breasts look perkier, a breast lift alone may be appropriate. On the other hand, small-chested women who are fine with the placement of their breasts may be better served by a breast augmentation on its own. For patients with concerns regarding the size, shape, volume, and position of their breasts, a combination breast augmentation plus breast lift may be the most beneficial option.

During your initial consultation for breast implants in Orange County, Dr. Motakef will thoroughly evaluate your concerns, discuss your ideal look, and explain all of your options in detail to help determine whether breast augmentation, breast lift, or a combination procedure may be right for you.

How does a breast lift with implants work?

A combination breast augmentation with lift can be a life-changing solution for women seeking to achieve or restore a more youthful, feminine, and sexy physique. Not only will implants help to create full breasts, but the lift portion of the procedure will also help to fix saggy breasts and bring them up to a more attractive and natural-looking position on the chest, giving the patient a stunning and sexy new contour.

During breast augmentation with breast lift surgery, which is performed while the patient is under general anesthesia and typically takes about 2 – 3 hours to complete, Dr. Motakef will make an incision(s) on the breast, through which the implant will be placed. Most often, breast augmentation plus lift procedures require either a lollipop incision, which runs around the areola and down the center of the lower half of the breast, or an inverted-T (anchor) incision, which involves an additional incision within the inframammary crease. The approach used will depend on a number of factors, including the amount of excess skin that needs to be removed, the size of the implant being used, and more. Once the implants have been placed, and the extra skin has been removed, Dr. Motakef will resculpt and raise the breasts, ensure the closest possible symmetry between the breasts, and close the incisions with sutures.

What to expect after breast lift and implants

Almost immediately following the procedure, patients can expect some level of discomfort, bruising, swelling, and fatigue. The first 24 – 48 hours should be dedicated to rest, though it is important for patients to take short, brief walks – such as to and from the bathroom – to promote proper circulation and avoid postoperative complications. After the first 2 – 3 weeks, a great deal of the swelling should have subsided. However, the breasts will still be tight, firm, swollen, and high-riding at this point. Around 4 – 6 weeks after the procedure, the majority of postoperative swelling will have resolved, and patients will begin to notice their beautiful new look taking shape. The final results of breast augmentation with lift may take up to 6 – 12 months to fully develop as the residual swelling resolves, the tissues settle, and the scars fade.
